Industry Days

Ever wondered if working in a trade is something you’d like to do?

If so, then join Trade Link Marlborough on one or more Industry Exploration Day.

Each scheduled day will involve visits to a number of different work places within an industry. You will get the chance to talk to apprentices and other workers and generally get an inside and realistic look at what goes on.

There are 4 Industry days on offer:

- Engineering
- Hospitality – Kitchen
- Aviation
- Automotive

Each trade-day will be offered once only during the 2009 school year.

We can take between 7 and 10 participants on each day.

Hospitality Industry Day:

8:30am - With HSI representative, pick up participants from designated spot and transport them to my office for a briefing. (Outcomes, expectations, health and safety and behaviour)

9:00am – Fast Food - Subway, Morgan Price. Tour and talk on Pathways, Salary expectations, Transferable skills. Day to day operation, ordering rotation etc. Sales strategies, Targets.Necessity of volume sales.

10:00 - morning tea-

10:15 - Medium Size restaurant. – Clubs of Marlborough David Fairlie Overview from the chef of the kitchen operation. Day to day operations, Salary expectations, Employment expectations. Step back and watch some of the preparations for the “lunch rush”.

11:15 – Catering operation - Clubs of Marlborough Overview, Sales & Marketing strategies, day to day operations, salary expectations.

12:15 – Lunch – Provided by the Clubs of Marlborough – Thank You!!!

1:00 - Marlborough Community College , Christine Warren, Cookery Tutor - Hopefully a little "hands on" opportunity. Explanation of MCC’s cookery program and what one’s day could consist of in the industry. Kitchen roles (Head Chef, Sous chef, Pastry Chef etc.) Costs and processes to be involved at MCC. A tour of the campus, pathways in the hospitality industry and an opportunity to meet some of the current students.

2:15 – Redwood Bakery, Steve Brensell - Pathways within the baking industry. Pastry chefs, bakers etc. Retail and wholesale. Management of own business. Salary expectations, Employment expectations, day to day operations

2:45- HSI - The end of the day will be a debriefing on where to go from here. Explanation of what is available to the school leavers in order get into the Hospitality industry.

3:15 - Drop participants back at designated spot.

Engineering Industry Day

8:30 – 8:50 - With Janene Bang, Competenz regional advisor, Gordon Laird, Smart Careers Advisor. Jim Doyle, Trade Link Marlborough, Giles Lancaster from MBC will try and join us. Meet at Trade Link Marlborough for a briefing. (Outcomes, expectations, health and safety and behaviour)

8:55 – 9:25 – Kevin Roughton of NMIT will address the Engineering program they offer. Certificate in Basic Mechanical engineering and Certificate in Engineering. NMIT’s location, costs and expectations associated with the program.

9:30 – 10:30am – Martella - John Phibbs, John will spend some time with us in the Martella shop and introduce the company and what role they play. We will then go over to New World to look at their refrigeration plants and how Martella services them.

10:30 - morning tea.

10:45 – 11:45 – Truform Stainless – Trevor Gibson will host us here and take us on a tour of Truform Stainless. Trevor will address what opportunities exist at Truform, what role they play in the Industry.

11:45 – 12:25 – Lunch

12:30 – 1:15 - Eckford Engineering: Phillip Gleeson will speak to the group about the role Eckford plays in the industry. How he got involved, some of his passions.

1:15 – 1:45 Blenheim Engineering Supplies – Terry Knight will address the group about BES and their role in the industry. He will speak about retail sales, industry sales, marketing, inventory, and opportunities.

2:00 - 3:00 – Cuddons Engineering Bruce Hitchcock - will take them through the expectations of an employee in that shop. Different areas of expertise within their business. Transferable skills, salary expectations, Customer Service. Technology Chat with them about the industry.

3:00 - Trade Link Marlborough - The end of the day will be a debriefing on where to go from here. Explanation of what is available to the school leavers in order get into the Engineering industry. Evaluations.

3:15 - Finish for the day.

Aviation Industry Day:

8:30am - With ATTTO representative, Dave Evans pick up participants and transport them to NMIT for a briefing. (Outcomes, expectations, health and safety and behaviour an explanation of ATTTO and an explanation of today’s focus… )

9:00am – NMIT Aviation Program. After a briefing about the day, Steve Holtum will then speak of the NMIT Aviation Civilian Program at base Woodbourne. Location: Aircraft training school.

9:45 – Air New Zealand – Blenheim Airport - Justine Lee holds a session explaining the career opportunities within Air New Zealand, the salary ranges, perks involved in the industry, their expectations on qualifications etc.

10:30 – Morning Tea At Blenheim Airport

10:45 – Safe Air -. Raewyn Heta – Career opportunities locally and overseas with Safe air and within the industry. Salary ranges, Expectations and Qualifications. Location: Reception

11:45 – Lunch – Hosted by RNZAF At Woodbourne Airman’s mess

12:15 – RNZAF -. Tremain Lucas takes us on a brief tour of the base. What it means to be a member of NZ’s armed forces. The Camaraderie, “Chain of command”, Training provided by RNZAF, Pathways, Salary ranges, Opportunities, Min/max Length of service, Civilian opportunities. Post RNZAF opportunities.

1:45 - Aviation Heritage Centre- Jane Orphan CEO of the Centre to provide a history of Aviation. The tour is courtesy of NMIT.

2:30 - Aero Club. Kevin Wilkey- Opportunities to meet with member(s) of the club. What membership is about. Training opportunities & Costs involved.

3:00 - ATTTO - With Dave Evans, the end of the day will be a debriefing on where to go from here. Explanation of what is available to the school leavers in order get into the Aviation industry.

3:15 – 3:30 - Drop participants back at pick up spot.

Automotive Industry Day:

8:30am - With Paul Hawkes, MITO representative, meet participants at designated spot for a briefing. (Outcomes, expectations, health and safety and behaviour)

9:00am - NMIT, Peter Kristofski, Certificate in Automotive Engineering and Certificate to Entry in Automotive Engineering. - Hopefully a little "hands on" opportunity. I would hope NMIT would explain what is available to the students. Costs and processes to be involved at NMIT. A tour of the campus with Anne Barrer and an opportunity to meet some of the current students.

10:15 - morning tea.

10:30 – 11:10– Repco – Tony O’Donnell - Tour and talk on supplying materials to the Automotive industry, Salary Expectations, Pathways, Customer Service.

11:15 – 11:45 - Maher & Mosley. Mike Maher will take us through the panel beating shop with explanations on skills, trainings, pathways, salary Expectations, Customer Service and career advice. What goes on.

11:55 – 12:40 - Transmar Services, Peter Kenyon – Expectations on a mechanic at Transmar, Pre requisites Transmar looks for. Service component, Specialized training. Technology, Market Niche
12:40 – 1:10 - Lunch

1:10 - 2:00 – Tractor Repairs & Spares, Adrian Orchard - will take them through the expectations of a Mechanic in that shop. Different areas of expertise within the shop. Transferable skills, salary expectations, Customer Service. Technology Chat with them about the industry.

2:10 – 3:00 Mayfield Motors, Sturrock Saunders. - Career Pathways, Transferable skills, Industry Training, Specialized training, salary expectations, customer Service.

3:00 - MITO - The end of the day will be a debriefing on where to go from here. Explanation of what is available to the school leavers in order get into the Motor industry.

3:15 - Return to Trade Link Marlborough.
